founder Martin Cohen is no stranger to the green room where guests relax
between segments of the long-running television show
Late Night with David Letterman. Recently Martin
took his son Matthew to catch Snoop Dogg. While there
Martin was thrilled to see guitarist Felicia Collins
playing LP's
award-winning Compact Congas.
"I was happy to see that at the center of
musician Felicia Collins' set up was a pair of LP
Giovanni Compact Congas," enthuses Martin. "Certainly
Matthew and I enjoyed Snoop Dogg and LP artist Anton
Fig but we also marveled at these drums. They
put out a huge conga sound. Through the mic's, you
really couldn't tell them from full-sized congas!"
The Giovanni
Compact Congas are award-winning "shell-less"
drums,
designed
by LP in collaboration with virtuoso Giovanni
Hidalgo, which play exactly like real congas (begging
the question!). Yet, as their name suggests, the
Giovanni
Compact Congas occupy a fraction of the
space. On Letterman, the shallow tunable congas were
mounted on stands and miked from underneath.
Continues Martin, "They looked as good as
they sounded, really contemporary and cutting edge.
At that moment, all of LP's efforts with our
restless design
spirit, made sense and crystallized.
It was enlightening hearing those compact drums project
a rich sound to millions of households."
Those legions of viewers, in addition, get to watch
Anton Fig work out nightly behind guest artists.
An LP artist, who has been with the house band just
shy of twenty years, Anton is a powerhouse and yet
he's sensitive when need be. In either event, his
energy is infectious. It's an art playing with the
same orchestra for two decades, making it sound as
vital as it was on the maiden voyage.
