Joaquín “Joaco” Arteaga was born in Caracas, Venezuela,
where he began playing drums at an early age. He has had passion for
music since childhood, prompting him to study Afro-Venezuelan percussion
at Fundación Bigott, along with drum set and Afro-Cuban instruments
with various teachers while living in Venezuela. Later, he attended
Boys Harbor in New York City. In1998, he moved to Barcelona where he
studied at the Conservatory L’Aula Jove de Musica Moderna i Jazz,
where he later became a teacher.
During his first years in Barcelona, Joaquín explored diverse musical styles
ranging from Flamenco to Acid Jazz; passing through Afro-Venezuelan rhythms and
Pop. Throughout his first years in Spain, he played with bands such as Flameland,
Tambores de mi Pueblo, Orquesta Kanabayen, El Cholo and Asstrio.
Since 2002, Joaquín has been a musician in Europe for renowned Latin artists
such as Andy Montañez, Larry Harlow, Andres Cepeda, Cano Estremera, Gabino

He has also played at various notorious international festivals both on the Latin
American and European circuit.
Joaquín Arteaga currently divides his time between teaching, playing
as a session artist, and developing projects of his own. His most recent
project, “Bloque 53,” is a Barcelona based Salsa band where
he participates as musical producer, composer and timbalero.
“Joaco” also teaches and produces percussion workshops and master
