Giovanni Hidalgo, as the history books will show, is one of the most unique
and acclaimed percussionists to have graced the stage. And as they say in salsa,
he is hot!
Recently the great conguero came to LP with a mission. The longtime artist
and collaborator of signature instruments, Giovanni journeyed to LP headquarters,
convened with the LP staff, and then got down to the business at hand.
LP engineer recorded Giovanni playing
each of the LP
instruments that bear
his name for use as sound clips on the www.latinpercussion.com. Giovanni played
his inimitable patterns on the LP
Galaxy Congas, Bongos,
and Djembes.
He also had fun tracking with the LP
Giovanni Compact Congas, the award winning “shell-less” conga,
which is suitable, as you will hear on the website, for studio use and live.
While in the studio mode, Giovanni also recorded a song for the upcoming year-end
LP/Congahead Holiday CD.
If that were not enough, Giovanni took part in a photo session, the results
of which will be seen in our upcoming 2006 catalog and in other promotional
materials.
A visit with the affable Giovanni is always a pleasant event for LP staff
and technicians. And when tape is rolling, it becomes a thrilling occasion.
Giovanni Hidalgo's session and live tally lists the most important names in
Latin and world music, including Eddie Palmieri, Carlos Santana, the legendary
Puerto Rican group Batacumbele, Dave Valentin, Paul Simon, Mickey Hart, and
Dizzy Gillespie. His right hand alone is a study in dexterity and when he puts
both limbs into play, the result is nothing short of astounding.
