Martin Cohen, Founder of Latin Percussion (LP),
was presented with a Special Recognition Award by The International Latin Music
Hall of Fame for his contributions spanning nearly four decades in the music
industry. The Third Annual Induction Award Ceremony and concert took place
on April 4, 2001, at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture, Bronx, NY,
and honored those who have contributed to and supported the growth of Latin
music around the world.
"Throughout my career, I have been fortunate enough to make the instruments
that the most talented artists in Latin music and other genres chose to express
themselves with," says Cohen. "To be recognized for LP's innovation
and uniqueness in design is icing on the cake." Joe Hernandez, President
of the International Latin Music Hall of Fame, adds: "Martin
Cohen's contribution to the world of percussion put drums of consistent
high quality in the hands of people around the world. We recognize the fact
that he put percussion 'on the map' with regard to Latin music instruments
produced on a large scale."
Other noted artists recognized at the event included pioneering congueros Carlos "Patato" Valdez, Armando
Peraza, and Candido
Camero, whom Martin Cohen has worked closely
with throughout his entire career.
Founded in 1964 in his basement, Martin Cohen combined
his degree in Mechanical Engineering with his passion for Latin music to hand-fashion
bongos and handheld percussion instruments to meet the needs of percussionists
and drummers. Today, LP is the world's largest manufacturer of Latin
and ethnic percussion products, including congas, bongos, timbales,
and djembes.
The company offers more than 2,000
percussion instruments and accessories for musicians of all levels.
