Martin Cohen's photographs of
LP artists are just one of the many things that make Latin Percussion so unique
among percussion companies. That is why I was honored, on behalf of Martin,
to organize a photo shoot of Bay area artists, percussionists, band leaders,
and local press.
We chose La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley, California as the location because
it has been a hub of Bay area rehearsals, concerts and classes. To get the
day started, LP generously donated Karl
Perazzo Timbales, Raul
Rekow Congas, and other hand
percussion needed for the shoot. Later on, Bay area percussionists showed
up with custom lacquers, paint jobs, and other unique finishes.
Who was there? You probably recognize many of the participants: LP artists Karl
Perazzo, Raul
Rekow and John
Santos. We also invited Cuban artists residing in the Bay area, such
as Carlos Aldama (former director of Afrocuba de Matanzas), Sandy Perez,
and Fito Reynoso.
Other attendees included Jazz Program Director of the Year and noted Latin
Music author, Chuy Varela, who is also program director of KCSM-FM. Luis Media,
Program Director of KPFA also made an appearance. In addition, Martin's long
time friend, Orestes Vilato, a Fania All Star legend also made the event a
special one.
Preceding the events was a meet and greet. Then everybody assembled outside
on the Berkeley streets for the shoot. Providing a signal, Martin Cohen climbed
the ladder, with camera in hand, upping the excitement level. The photo taken
in front of La Pena is a snapshot of Bay area legends.
A
highlight of the day was a surprise birthday cake for Karl
Perazzo , customized with a set of his signature Matador timbales. Everyone
on the street lifted their voices in a hearty happy birthday to Karl.
Special thanks to Sylvia Sherman of La Pena, Karl Perazzo, and Debbie
Perazzo, for rendering the day an unqualified success.
